Set Some GOALS for 09'

When is the last time you actaully worked really hard for somehthing and your work paid off? For example, let say you wanted a used car. You have a job and you worked all summer and your parents said: If you work and raise half of the money we will pay for the other half. This is good thing. That is a life lesson. It seems with everyones busy schedule people and kids today are just given things. Set a goal and work hard for that goal.

During this next couple of weeks I want you to find a few things that you really want to improve or accomplish. Then set some goals on how you can achieve them. I want one physical goal eg: sports, weight gain, weight loss, batting average, strike outs etc. Then I want one social goal or mental goal: improving grades, improving relationships, helping out more around the house, etc. In a couple of weeks I going to ask for your goals in writing.

Michael Jordan
The famous basketball player Michael Jordan wrote the following about goal setting in his book, I Can’t Accept Not Trying: Michael Jordan on the Pursuit of Excellence: I approach everything step by step....I had always set short-term goals. As I look back, each one of the steps or successes led to the next one. When I got cut from the varsity team as a sophomore in high school, I learned something. I knew I never wanted to feel that bad again....So I set a goal of becoming a starter on the varsity. That’s what I focused on all summer. When I worked on my game, that’s what I thought about. When it happened, I set another goal, a reasonable, manageable goal that I could realistically achieve if I worked hard enough....I guess I approached it with the end in mind. I knew exactly where I wanted to go, and I focused on getting there. As I reached those goals, they built on one another. I gained a little confidence every time I came through.
...If [your goal is to become a doctor]...and you’re getting Cs in biology then the first thing you have to do is get Bs in biology and then As. You have to perfect the first step and then move on to chemistry or physics.
Take those small steps. Otherwise you’re opening yourself up to all kinds of frustration. Where would your confidence come from if the only measure of success was becoming a doctor? If you tried as hard as you could and didn’t become a doctor, would that mean your whole life was a failure? Of course not.
All those steps are like pieces of a puzzle. They all come together to form a picture....Not everyone is going to be the greatest....But you can still be considered a success....Step by step, I cant see any other way of accomplishing anything.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! CYLCLONES

I hope all of you have enjoyed spending time with your families. Please, always remember your families are what holidays are about.. Family first. Make sure to tell your loved ones that you care and appreciate everything they do for you. It is so easy, you can text, email, phone, or tell them in person. Don't go through life not telling the poeple you care about most how you feel. That is a tough situation if they suddenly are not there anymore. So communicate and cherish the time you have together.

HOLD ONTO THE ROPE

Coach Bertman then began what amounted to a reenactment of LSUs first SEC championship season in over 20 years. "I remember at the start of the season, I hung a rope off the front of my desk. I told the fellas 'imagine you are holding onto that rope, hanging over a cliff. Who would you want to be holding the other end?' Oh, they said names of buddies, heroes, coaches, each one had a different person. I said to them, 'those were all good choices, but when you can answer the question with 'any teammate,' then that is what you will be, a team." As he passed into the SEC Championship game, I closed my eyes and leaned back. Batters came and went, weary pitchers, who had thrown the night before, were pulled off the bench in relief, and heads hung low. The back and forth of 11 tied up innings poured out of him until at last, a tired Stan Loewer faced the go ahead run. LSU reliever Robby Smith stood up on the edge of the dugout and shouted to his pitcher, "Hey Stan, hold onto the rope!" Heads came up. Marty Lanoux at third called over to the first baseman, "Hold onto the rope." The word passed from player to player, 'around-the-horn,' until even the dugout was on its feet. "They sensed it," said Skip. "Somehow, they knew they had already won." The pitch! A quick chopper to the short stop, a simple toss to second base and the Bertman dynasty was set on its path to this one Tuesday in the spring of 2004.
Fellas in the past we have talked about this..I feel the past couple of seasons your teammates would be the last people you would want holding the other side of the rope...If your going to say it! mean it.!.

PITCHER'S LAW

Pitcher’s Law @PW

Always throw the ball with a purpose! Not just bull pen work! Always means always! If you are playing catch you should be working on something: throwing to a spot, sinker action (hand inside the baseball), movement with change-up (hand inside the baseball), or something else. These things can be done during light toss or playing catch.

0-2 Pitches: Pitch has to look hittable! I am NOT saying we have to throw a strike, but a pitch two feet off the plate or a foot over the hitters head does us no good!

This is not a waste pitch!!! You have put yourself in an excellent situation- use it to set up y our next pitch or out pitch!!! Pitch and location of 0-2 pitch should depend on what your next pitch is going to be…move the hitters eyes away from area of your next pitch.
Discuss

Put up zero’s early! Self explanatory! No multi-run innings!!

Step-off: When you hear these words do not panic, you have a lot of time! Just step off and check your lead runner then others.

Also, step off and communicate with other players if you do not know what is going on with any type of situation. Do the same if the runner at second if getting a big deal or if you are not comfortable with something.

Leads at second base. Stop the runner before going to the plate- do not allow walking of huge lead. Use the inside move if you have to and remember that you do not need to throw the ball.

Relax! Have confidence in your abilities! You will have the ball because I have confidence in you. This is your OPPORTUNITY to EARN a bigger role or a smaller role.

Body language on the mound and in meetings: Body language on the mound leads to mound presence. If you give up a monster HR of anything else your body language should be the same as when you strike someone out.
Body language in the meetings is also very important- if your body language says you do not care then you probably do not care! This upsets your pitching coach! L I will excuse you from the meeting.

Pay attention during PFP’s and in all other situations! During PFP’s, bunt situations, first and third situations, etc…, if it is not your turn to take a physical rep, it IS YOUR TURN TO TAKE A MENTAL REP!!! use these opportunities to become better! Ask questions if you do not understand something!!! Ask questions before going to the mound!!!

Roles: Roles will be defined and redefined throughout the year. You do not have to accept the role you are given, but you will have to deal with the role you are given! Do not feel sorry for yourself- prove to the coaching staff that you deserve a larger role! Then go out and earn it! All roles are extremely important! If you are asked to get one hitter out it will be in a crucial situation and is a very important role! Shut up and do your job! J

Down time: Use down time to work on foot work for picks, visualization, etc…

Bring some kind of notebook to all meetings and games! Bring notebooks to meetings to write down important aspects of our discussions. Bring notebooks to games and write down things you observe- how to set up certain hitters, who runs and who does not run, who is a drag bunter, who you can get in on, who you need to stay away from, etc… You will be asked to contribute your thoughts in meetings!

CROSS-OVER SYMMETRY: You should have one or the other. If you use weight it should be very light weight- two pounds. Do Jobe exercises on a regular basis. Daily 3-4 times per week.

Do Not Separate your shoulder diving for a ball during BP! Use your heads!

We need to get better everyday!!! If we are all on the same page and work hard at it together, this process will lead to our success and it will be fun!!!

Mentally and physically prepare yourself to dominate!!!

SPRING TRIP

Parents & Players

The Pueblo West baseball Team will be playing three games during our spring break in Anthem Arizona. Fundraising is essential to make this a success. We have some money left over from last years fundraising. As a result, the money needed for our trip is not as MUCH if we wouldn't have saved and fundraised last year.. We are in the process of selling Christmas trees..I am asking every player that is not playing winter sports to sell 3 trees...that is not to0 much to ask..
In the next few months we will be doing super bowl boards.. remember parents and players this for the kids not myself... so If we want to go and do nice things we need to help with the fundraising...Those parents that helped with both board these past two years thank you...

Here is a thought and question for the parents.. If our fundraising covers all the Hotel bills and the majority of the food for our trip, would you consider flying to Arizona and the parents picking up the tab..? We have looked into some prices...240$ round trip...From Denver to Phoenix. I think that is pretty affordable. I think that would be a liftime experience for these young men. However if it doesn't fit in with your finaces then I understand...The one big problem I have is that the Airlines need us to reserve tickets within the next month. We as coaches don't know who all will make varsity...we know who can play its just the young kids who we really havn't seen yet...so this is a problem I am trying explore so it doesn't deter us from flying if possible..

Please keep all of this in mind...

REMEMBER: THIS IS FOR THE KIDS..
